O365 Guest User Account Setup

After your guest account has been requested, you will receive an email with the subject line: “West Point Guest Account Creation”

1. Select the link in the email to view your encrypted message.  This will open a web browser to decrypt your secure email.

2. Click the button to get your one time code and then check your email inbox for a SEPARATE email that will have a numeric code to unlock your account email.  Enter that code on in the webpage and your Guest account creation email will be unlocked.  Please take note of the Username and Temporary password that are provided in this email.

3. Click on the link provided to begin the guest account setup process. Please take note of the Username and Temporary password that are provided in this email.

5. Next enter the Temporary password provided in the space provided

6. Select Sign in.

7. You will then have to told “More information required” because the use of Multi-factor authentication is required and you will now be walked through setting it up for your account.  Click “Next” to proceed.

8. You will be prompted to Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app.

(You can use another authenticator app if you choose but instructions for other apps is not provided.  You can also select “I want to set up a different method” if you do not have a smart phone that can install the Authenticator app.)

  1. Open the App store of your choice (Play Store for Android, App Store for iPhone or iPads)
  2. Search “Microsoft Authenticator”
  3. Install the application.
  4. Click “Next” on your computer.

9. Follow the on-screen instructions for actions to take on your phone (allow notifications, Select “add account,” Select “Work or School”).  Select “Next”.

10. You will then get prompted on your phone to scan the QR code on your computer. Scan the code on your computer screen, click “Next” on your computer and then approve the login in the Authenticator App on your phone.

11.  When you see the screen below you will know that the Authenticator has been successfully set up for your account and will be used anytime you login to your account.

12. You will then have to update your password.  The password must be at least 15 characters in length and contain three of the following character types (lowercase letters, uppercase letter, numbers, and symbols).


13. You will be asked to review the West Point Terms of Use.  Click the “>” Icon on the righthand side of the notice to expand the Policy.  Read the Terms of Use and then click “Accept” to proceed.



14. You will now be able to see the services available to your guest account.  Many will be limited to just Teams access.  Once you are added to a Microsoft Team you will receive an email notifying you. Select the link in the email to bring you to the Team.

15. If you are a member of another organization that uses O365 and Teams (DoD CVR for example) you will need to select “Use the Web app instead” of using the thick application.  This is to avoid confusion and lack of functionality between the different O365 accounts.

16. Select your account and log in with the password you created.

17. Click continue on the screen shown below and you will then be prompted to approve your login
request using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.

18. You will see the menu options on the left-hand side of your screen where you can chat with individuals or see files and chat within the Teams you are a member of.
