How to unjoin a windows device from Azure AD

Cadets leaving the academy permanently must unjoin their AAD joined devices to properly make it a personal computer and remove it from West Point management system.

NOTE: Follow these instruction in the order they are prescribed. Performing the steps out of order may lock you out of your computer or lose access to your data.

WARNING: Your Office 365 desktop application (Outlook, Work, PowerPoint…) will no longer work on this device after performing these steps. You may access them through web apps by logging in to Microsoft Office Home.

  1. Backup Bitlocker Recovery Key.

  1. Create a local administrator account.

    2. Verify the new password works by login in with the new account. Skipping this step may risk getting locked out of the computer if the password doesn’t work.
      1. Hit “Ctrl + Alt + Del” to show the Windows Security window.
      2. Select “Switch User”. This will bring you to a login screen.
      3. Select “Other user”.
      4. Type “.\newaccountcreated” (without quotes) in the username field, the password in the password field and press enter.
    3. Wait for a minute for services to start.
    4. Reboot the system and proceed to step 4.
  1. Unjoin AAD.
    1. Login with your account.
    2. Go to Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School.
    3. Select your account and select Disconnect.
    4. Follow the prompts and provide the local administrator credentials when prompted.
    5. Reboot the device to finish the unjoin process.
    6. After reboot, login with the local admin account created in step 3.
    7. You can find you old files in C:\Users\firstname.lastname\OneDrive – West Point.
